Another year has passed by with Lancers being too lame to attend a Homecoming.
Homecoming is a classic high school memory every teenager should be able have, and almost no Lancers can say they do.
Every time Student Council has attempted to host a dance, since the homecoming of 2012, it’s resulted in unsold tickets and minimal student support.
The problem is that everyone thinks that no one else is going, therefore, they don’t buy tickets, and no one ends up going, thus the dance gets cancelled, as it did this year.
Homecoming isn’t narrowed to just one grade either, so you can mingle and dance with friends from all grades.
Dances are a staple of American high school culture, and it seems like every other high school is capable of having a homecoming dance, except us.
Scroll through Twitter and you’ll see countless dreamy homecoming proposals, and all you girls gawk over them, but still didn’t buy a ticket. Take a peek at Instagram during the fall season, and you’ll most likely see friends from other towns getting fancied up and having fun at “HoCo 2015” with their best friends.
Yet, Londonderry hasn’t been able to rile up enough excitement for a fun dance in three years.
And don’t even try to use the grinding ban as an excuse of why you didn’t want to go to Homecoming.
First of all, it’s a dance at school, not a club. Do you really want to be explicitly dancing like that as your math teacher is watching you?
Second, dancing with members of the opposite gender isn’t against the rules, administration and teachers simply don’t want to see you on top of each other.
For those of you who have been to a Sweet 16 party before, you know how enjoyable those can be. Now were you necessarily grinding on people? No, so there’s no reason to do so on school grounds.
A homecoming would have united the school and given everyone a chance to let loose and have fun, all while looking good.
Girls, picking out a pretty dress and wearing high heels is always fun.Think of all the Instagram-worthy photos you could’ve taken.
For those girls that dread wearing a dress, it’s only one night of the year, and you can wear sweatpants all of the other 364.
Boys, it’s understandable that struggling over tying a tie might not be your favorite thing to do. However, even if you are uncomfortable in a button up, it would’ve been well worth it when you laid your eyes on one of the pretty girls in the room.
If at least one dance would go successfully, Student Council would spend more money and effort into future dances, and they’d only get better, all we need is one good dance.
Looking back 20 years from now, a night of fun and dancing at homecoming would’ve been much more memorable than yet another night of laying in bed watching Netflix, which is how the majority of you probably spent your Saturday night.
You’re only in high school for four years, so Lancers, you better make the most of it. If the opportunity for Homecoming rolls around again next year, seriously think about how fun it could be.
