As the weather gets hotter, skirts and dresses get shorter and straps become thinner. With summer right around the corner, the prime time for dress code violations is now.
When the temperature rises to over 90 degrees and classrooms feel like saunas, it makes it impossible to focus on writing a thesis statement or calculating the volume of a prism.
On days when it’s scorching, what else can you wear besides dresses, shorts, and other light clothing? Rules aside, there are safety aspects to consider. The more clothing you are wearing, the hotter you will be, and the heat can make people feel sick and lightheaded.
We aren’t saying that the dress code isn’t necessary, but on the sweltering days students deserve a break–especially the girls. Wearing a spaghetti strap tank top doesn’t distract other students because not all tank tops are revealing. They are great for keeping cool.
Clothing is constantly evolving, so finding “school appropriate” clothes at the mall or other popular stores is nearly impossible. The struggle to stay in touch with style can clash with school regulations, especially in the summer heat.
Obviously if a girl is wearing a skirt or shorts that are really short then she should be asked to change. But on these hot days, it seems to me that as long as a girl is wearing clothing that doesn’t show cleavage or anything else revealing, they shouldn’t be asked to change.
So please. We beg you. Cut us a break on these hot summer days.
