When freshmen students walk up the 600 stairs to get to their next class, they will soon have a piece of artwork to look at.
Senior James Somers is hoping to gather ideas as well as artists to help him paint a mural in the stairwell at the end of the 600s hallways.
“That staircase is so boring,” Somers said. “Art will brighten it up.”
Somers is looking for students to submit ideas, sketches or offers to help paint. Students should start brainstorming now, so they can submit ideas to House 4 by Monday, Dec. 14.
He will make his decisions by Dec. 23, the day before winter break, about what to paint and who will be painting with him.
“Anyone who is willing to help is appreciated and welcome with open arms,” Somers said.
Students who aren’t that artistic are also very welcome to help.
“I’m not even very artistic,” Somers said, “so why should that stop anyone else from being a part of this cool project.”
The mural needs to incorporate the words Londonderry High School, LHS or a picture of the Lancer mascot.
“There really are no guidelines to this except that it needs to incorporate the school’s name and mascot,” Somers said. “Other than that, it’s open to interpretation. I’m just looking for something that gets people’s attention and shows what Lancer Nation’s all about.”
The hope is, according to Somers, that students will see the mural and “see the good aspects of the school.”
“And maybe when students down the road see the mural,” Somers said, “they will feel connected to the school and the larger community and want to work a little harder.”
