Mrs. Nelson
The start of every school year brings several new ideas and people to Londonderry High School. This year, one of these people is Julie Nelson, the latest addition to the science department and Lancer Nation.
Nelson currently teaches biology at LHS, but her first career was as a registered dental hygienist. She then transitioned to teaching dental sciences, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and other courses for 12 years at the collegiate level in Florida.
“I enjoyed the teaching aspect, but not the 12-month, year round schedule,” Nelson said.
Nelson recently moved back from Florida to New Hampshire.
“I heard amazing things about Londonderry High School and Lancer Nation (especially your sports, band and extracurriculars!) and I do want to be involved in some of those activities as soon as ‘Covid World’ goes away,” Nelson said. “I’m thrilled to be here at Londonderry and love my fellow science teachers.”
In addition to creating an organized teaching style and systemizing her classroom, Nelson hopes to showcase her experience from around the world in her curriculum.
“I am totally impressed with the resources I have available to me within the science department and can’t wait to show my background from a different perspective of living in some unusual places in the world,” Nelson said. “I like to show students that if they want to travel the world, they will gain a greater respect for the wonderful place we call home, but still gain some appreciation for other cultures.”
Nelson’s goals expand beyond the current state of the school.
“It is my goal to flip the classroom like I did in Florida, but that requires more in person activities which are difficult to achieve with remote learning,” Nelson said. “This will continue to be my goal for the future when we have the students in the classroom permanently.”
Outside of the classroom, Nelson enjoys riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle with her husband and their friends.
“We frequently find a new restaurant to visit and spend at least two to three hours on a weekend going to and from that location,” Nelson said.
As LHS settles into the school year, Nelson hopes that her students will stay optimistic.
“I want all my students to know that I will make every effort to help you succeed, even when you may not be ‘feeling it,’” Nelson said. “I’ll make sure to provide you the happy voice to encourage you to ‘get it done.’ A favorite writer of mine is Mark Twain who said: ‘The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.’”
