Student Activities Club has grown to be the largest club in the high school. Transforming from around 70 members in the 2014-2015 school year to upwards of 165 members this current year, the club has clearly caught the attention of students throughout the school.
Students from all over the school, with various personalities collaborate daily after school, during lunch periods and even in between classes. English teacher Ms. Murphy’s room has always been considered a “home base” for many of these students.
Around four years ago, a group of 15-20 students had a desire to play games and take part in recreational activities with their friends after a lengthy day at school. These students, ranging from varsity athletes to kids who simply wanted a place to hang out, created this student-driven club.
“Students are coming to me daily asking how they can get involved in the club,” adviser Ms. Murphy said. “This number is a little overwhelming, but it tells me how important it is to allow kids to be kids. It really shows how great the community is here, where students can simply just run around and play tag. I am very impressed with the board this year. They are very organized and excited for the upcoming events. I’m also excited about the new events myself.”
Junior Sean Cotter, president of the club said that he is “very excited for this year.” Cotter, like many other students heard of Student Activities Club freshman year in Ms. Murphy and Mr. Willis’s humanities class. Other students, such as junior Maddie Sullivan heard of the club by hanging around in room 614 after school.
“This club gives students a sense of togetherness and develops a family atmosphere among all of its members,” Cotter said. “I am very proud of all the board members this year for having our events planned already. I’m also thankful of everyone that’s joined, and Ms. Murphy for giving us the opportunity to make this club how it is today.”
According to Murphy, there is no criteria and no selection process to join the club. Whoever wants “to come play and make memories can do so.”
“Kids grow up so quickly nowadays and find very little time to just be kids,” Murphy said. “It’s good for them to have some time to just be with friends and enjoy.”
Club historian junior Shannon Siders said that the student activities club is “certainly a different type of club.”
“It brings a lot of different types of people together,” Siders said. “It is a lot of fun to meet new people, but also bond with old friends. Every event is a new opportunity to have a good time and enjoy the company of your peers.”
