Twenty hours front to back. That’s how long it took the LHS video club to write, film and edit their 90-second PSA for the New Hampshire Media Teachers PSA contest. All of their hard work paid off and they took home 4th place for their PSA.
“It’s something they [New Hampshire Media Teachers] do every year,” senior member Paige Scanlon said. “They have different requirements for the rules. It has to be 90 seconds or less, a VHS tape, and a jumpscare. And they also have topics to choose from, like stranger danger, and safe application and removal of makeup – which is what we did.”
The video club is strictly a club right now, but they are hoping that these PSA contests, having more members join, and talking about the club will motivate a media class to happen through the school course system.
“The contest itself is designed for classes, but we don’t have a media class here,” adviser and German teacher Brooke Ent said. “So, we are the only submission that is exclusively on our own time. We were the only ones that didn’t have class time to work on it.”
Ent became involved with the club two years ago after the media teacher, Karen Robinson, retired.
“A couple members of the club came up to me from class and said ‘will you do this?’ and I said sure,” Ent said. “I learn more from them than they do from me.”
They are hoping to get gaine more interest since right now, the club consists of only five members.
“One of our goals is looking for ways to promote this club,” Scanlon said.
The club is also looking to teach more people about media and video editing. They hope to be able to compete in more video competitions in the future.
“Right now we’re working on a video for the athletic leadership council, which is not like our normal project because it’s not like a short film, it’s a promotional video,” Scanlon said. “ I’m trying to teach editing because I am graduating next year.”
