In music, certain songs transcend mere entertainment and become powerful vessels of personal expression. Frank Ocean’s song “White Ferrari” stands as an emotional testament to the artist’s journey through grief, particularly in the aftermath of losing his brother in a tragic accident. As we progress into the song, Ocean uses the metaphorical and literal White Ferrari to navigate the complex emotions of loss, love, and remembrance.
At the heart of “White Ferrari” lies the metaphorical White Ferrari itself, a powerful symbol that transcends much more than his car. This luxury car becomes a poignant representation of the cherished moments and memories shared with his brother before the tragic incident.
“White Ferrari, good times./ Stick by me, close by me / You were fine / You were fine here,” Ocean sings.
These lines suggest that the White Ferrari becomes a dreamlike sanctuary, preserving the memories of good times with a loved one.
As the lyrics unfold, Ocean masterfully weaves together themes of love and loss, giving listeners glimpses into the emotional landscape he navigated following the tragedy. The song becomes a reflective reminiscence, capturing the nuances of Ocean’s bond with his brother.
“I care for you still and I will forever / That was my part of the deal, honest / We got so familiar / Spending each day of the year, White Ferrari / Good times / In this life, life / In this life, life,” Ocean sings.
The contrast between dimensions adds depth to the narrative, conveying a sense of existential reflection on the significance of their relationship.
Ocean tells his listeners about how he never got to say goodbye and how his life had changed more than what he thought physically what he did.
“You left when I forgot to speak / So I text to speech, lesser speeds / Texas speed, yes,” Ocean sings.
Ocean’s lyrics emphasize the precious nature of life and how fragile it may be. We must remember and cherish it before it is gone and he references “Texas speed” which reveals his drug use through his struggles.
“White Ferrari” emerges not just as a song but as a profound eulogy, encapsulating Frank Ocean’s journey through the depths of grief. Ocean invites listeners to share in the poignancy of his personal experience giving the listener an inside look into his mind and relationship with his brother. Ocean created a timeless musical piece that resonates with those who have grappled with the complexities of loss and remembrance.

Wrong. White Ferrari was released in 2016 and Ryan died in 2020. Frank even had Ryan pick which version of WF would go on the album. He ended up ditching the version that Ryan chose but the version that was played at Coachella is speculated to be the one.
