Shaping the Road to Election

The New Hampshire State Primary is fast approaching and voters are ready to cast their votes that will create the final list of candidates that we will see on the November ballot. The State Primary will be taking place on Tuesday September 10, 2024 in the gym here at the high school from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Statistics from The Civics Center show that newly eligible eighteen year old voters account for 13.2% of the voter population in NH, the top five towns with the most eighteen year old voters are Hanover, Durham, Bedford, Dover and Plymouth, all with registration rates over 40% or higher with turnout rates of 35% or higher. Manchester NH, and Keene NH with the lowest percentages.

Statistics show that from 2000-2024 more than 75% of registered 18 to 24 year old’s were performing their civic duty in the voting booth. The number of registered voters in NH has significantly declined since the pandemic and shifts aways from the polling places, according to USA Facts. Even with additional resources and opportunities to register to vote, New Hampshire was still named the toughest state to vote in nationwide. Young adults who are newly eligible to vote have to provide documents providing proof of identity which can be challenging for high school students without acceptable picture ID documents.

Studies from The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy has shown that the decrease in voting numbers in the age range is due to prioritizing other things, brushing it aside and having to prioritize many other opportunities outside of daily life; “And young people often have irregular school and work schedules while juggling life’s many other demands and distractions.”

If you have friends who are eligible to vote that have moved away to college or have joined the military, please remind them that they can vote by absentee ballot.

For more information on registering to vote visit LondonderryNH.gov  if you have specific voter questions reach out to Londonderry Town Clerk, Sherry Farrell at (603) 243-1100 x199.

Voting is a right and a civic duty for those who are eligible.  Even if you aren’t eligible to vote yet, you can educate yourself by reading about local, state and presidential candidates; their experience and voting records on issues that are important to you.  By doing this, when your time comes to be eligible, you will be an informed voter.
