Homecoming proposals: Why are they so stressful?

What’s worse than not finding the best homecoming dress you may ask? Not being asked to homecoming in a timely manner. Making sure your makeup is perfect, your hair is flowing accordingly, and your dress is looking perfect is something that every girl going to a big dance stresses about.

Waiting patiently, day after day, for the “Hey, come outside really quickly” text. Or waiting to see his car pull into my driveway, with flowers in his left hand and a sign in his right. Being the person waiting to be asked is not only stressful, but also mentally painful.

Trying to figure out the hints on when, where, and how he’s going to ask me is honestly a drag. I don’t want to push too much on the hoco-proposal, but I want to know why it’s been dragged out so much. I was asked on September 19 and homecoming was on September 21. Yes, the poster was very thought out, and the flowers were beautiful, but I couldn’t wait anymore. For a week I would avoid all plans for the evening just in case it would happen that night. I missed out on Crumbl cookies just in case he decided to go to my house and ask and I wouldn’t be there. I ordered my Chipotle online and was there 30 minutes late because I was certain he was going to be outside my house waiting for me to walk outside. I would make sure my hair was perfect, and my makeup looked good every night just in case he came to my house and we took a picture with the sign and flowers that he gave me. I was so impatient it was painful.

Then came Thursday night, around 7:00 pm. I was sitting at the dinner table shoving my face with homemade gyros, and I heard something knock on the window. It was him. Finally getting the chance to see him, with flowers in his left hand and a sign in the right was something I was desperately waiting for. The sudden relief I felt was through the roof. On September 21, my hair was flowing, my makeup was perfect, and I was finally asked to homecoming.

When it’s game day on the third week of September, most guys are ready to go and know what’s coming, you have the pregame music going and are loosening up for another battle. But, whether you win or lose, the thought at the end of that week is “How am I going to ask her to homecoming?”.

The entire week you’re making up a plan, everyone is asking when you’re gonna do it, and you have no idea. You think it would be easy, but for some reason it’s not. You want to get every small detail right, the time, the place, the sign. It’s a lot to think about, and with all these things on your plate, it starts to get to you.

Just trying to get the question out can be hard enough sometimes, but making a whole sign and getting people involved in it, that’s a very different story, and takes time that I just didn’t have then. Game planning for my football game and focusing on figuring out a homecoming proposal was a tough task, but just like with football, it really came down to how well the proposal could be executed.

I was clueless that week, asking myself how I would do it. It took me until September 20, literally the day before homecoming to ask her, and I was harassed by all of her friends for about a week and a half, so you know she was waiting for me to ask.

Lucky enough for me, I played football, so I had the time to do it, I just didn’t know how. A sign? Flowers and a card? It ate at me just days before that game, but I was also lucky enough to find some help as well, and sometimes that’s just what you need.

It took me a while to figure out what I was going to do, but when the plan came together, it came out better than even I expected, and I don’t think I could’ve been more relieved when I finally asked her after a big win in Concord that Friday night.

Dillon Tufts, Sports Chief

Dillon Tufts has been on staff for two years. Last year he was a sports editor and this year is the Sports chief. Dillon spends a lot of his free time hanging out with his friends or playing sports. He currently plays football and lacrosse for LHS.
