While football fans were roaring, and soccer players were scoring, the golf season was in full swing, and they were showing out. They were the only team to beat Bedford in the regular season and finished 3rd in the D1 State Tournament.
Throughout the year the team had some stars, two of those being senior Cole Metivier and senior Carter Browning, who both got invited to the individual state tournament last Saturday at Beaver Meadow Country Club.
Metivier believes the season went “well” after a rough start.
“The season started off a little shaky,” Metivier said, “but got the nerves out of the way and finished strong.”
For Metivier, he thinks that his positive mentality has been able to help him in less than ideal situations.
“My biggest strength this season has been the ability to recover from a bad shot,” Metivier said. “Just being able to get back in the right mindset after hitting a bad shot.”
Metivier wants to continue to polish his game going into the individual state tournament.
“Going to focus on minimizing the bad shots, hitting fairways, and playing smooth,” Metivier said.
Metivier trusts his game and wants it to pay off on Saturday.
“I’m feeling confident in my abilities this weekend,” Metivier said. “I know that the time and effort I put in will pay off and hopefully lead me to a win.”
Throughout the course of the season, Browning thought the team was “playing to their potential.”
“We all motivated each other to give full effort and shoot our best,” Browning said. “Especially making states and finishing 3rd place, our improvement throughout the season was amazing to see.”
Similar to Metivier, Browning used his positive attitude to his advantage.
“I think my biggest strength was my ability to flush out a bad round or bad shot then come back and play like I know I can play,” Browning said.
Browning is going to keep things the same going into the individual tournament, and leave it up to his work to speak for itself.
“I’m not going to change anything this weekend for the state championship,” Browning said. “I feel like I’m playing pretty good right now and if I stay focused for 18 holes I think I’ll give myself a good chance to contend.”
For coach Daniel Grant, he felt that this season had “more ups than downs,” including the win against Bedford.
“The win against Bedford was really exciting for the team for a few reasons,” Grant said. ”Bedford had an undefeated season going and we ended up hanging the only L on them all year. They went on to win the D1 State Championship but we played spoiler to their perfect season.”
Grant said that the team was “a great group of golfers to be around,” and enjoyed being with the team.
“They really enjoyed playing golf and working on their game to improve,” Grant said. “I also really enjoyed listening to them discuss course strategy on the way to matches and always picking each other up if someone had an off day.”
Grant will “miss this team” as he had lots of “great memories” from this year.
“Qualifying for the tournament is always special, the win against Bedford is certainly memorable, seeing how positive they are and how they always pull for one another,” Grant said. “I think finishing 3rd in the State Tournament and seeing how proud they were is probably the best memory for me. We went into the tournament as a 6th seed (out of 8 teams) and we knocked off both Concord and Windham – the only teams we hadn’t beaten this season. Not finishing 2nd by a stroke was tough but the fact that they beat every team in D1 at some point throughout the season is pretty cool.”
