Students roam the 200s hallway daily, most of the time, they are unaware of the happenings in their own school. The new Lancer Spirit Bulletin Board, compiled with news, holds all current and upcoming events that Lancers need to know about.
The Lancer Spirit was one of the clubs, out of many, to get the opportunity to have a bulletin board. Junior Kaylee Mague, a features editor for Lancer Spirit, has taken action on creating it for the purpose to showcase everything having to do with the newspaper, while also spreading awareness. Mague hopes to encourage other students to join and share her love of this program with the help of the bulletin board.
“Mrs. DeWinkeleer asked if anyone would be interested in decorating our class’s bulletin board, so I volunteered,” Mague said. “I’m pretty sure this is the first year we get one, so it’s awesome to be able to have such a big board.”
Earlier this year, House two assistant principal, Ryan O’Connor, sent out an email inquiring about prospect bulletin boards. He felt they would share information for everyone entering the building at any given time.
“If it’s actually like a working hub, I think it would be great for kids that don’t have social media and stuff,” O’Connor said. “You’d be surprised at the number of parents and community members that use this building after school hours, so it’s a great way for them to see what’s going on here at the high school.”
With The Lancer Spirit looking to expand their effect on the community, they jumped at the opportunity. Taking charge, Mague’s main intent was to make the bulletin board increase interests in stories and events.
“It’s not just about writing,” Mague said. “It’s also about listening to people’s stories, shining light on issues that matter, and helping people, and yourself, learn about the world around us.”
Mague explains that it all started when she emailed O’Connor to take him up on his proposal. The two then met to discuss further where O’Connor said he would “love to give The Lancer Spirit a bulletin board.”
“That night I went home and made a rough draft on Canva of how I wanted the bulletin board to look and showed it to the rest of the editorial board to make sure they liked it,” Mague said.
With the approval from the editorial board and O’Connor, Mague was able to undertake the creative aspects for this project.
“There are three main focus points of the bulletin board: a current events area, an about The Lancer Spirit area, and a section about how to get to the app and website,” Mague said. “The layout probably won’t change this year, the only thing that will change is the current events area of the board. This portion will be updated regularly, as events come and go.”
Overall, Mague is just glad to give something back to our community and make an impact on the school.
“I hope students and staff will take the time to look at the board and see what is happening within the school,” Mague said. “Hopefully it will impact them by encouraging them to attend events that they’ve either never heard of or never thought of going to. I also hope it will draw attention to this class as it improves students’ writing skills, investigative skills, and so much more.”
