Ever since school counselor Angela Harrison came to LHS, she had expressed her interest in working with the Adult Education program. This year, she was able to move from House 1 to House 3 where that counselor also works with Adult Ed.
“I love working with students that are seeking alternative pathways to graduating high school,” Harrison said. “So I had expressed my interest in doing that
This was not an easy decision to make a big switch since she had spent three years in House one and had made a connection with all the students and families that she worked with.
“I was very sad to leave House one because of the connections that I made with students and families,” Harrison said. “It was a hard transition for me because I didn’t want anyone to think that I was leaving for a specific reason, like that I didn’t like House One.”
Although the change was hard for Harrison, she is adjusting well to her new responsibilities and her new set of students.
“I am still doing the college process and future planning,” Harrison said.
Having her two different sets of kids that she handles at different parts of the day, it could be hard stepping into and out of that different setting every day.
“At 2:15 PM, my brain switches over to Adult Ed and we start to think outside the box,” Harrison said. “I have a student who is visiting a tattoo shop to talk about body piercings and how to become a body piercer. I do a lot of communication with companies in the area with all different types of job positions.”
Before coming to LHS, she spent five years as a counselor at a combined middle and high school. She said wants to be the difference for students and give them the freedom to choose what they want from their education.
“The reason I got into this job is because I wanted to be a support for kids and let them know that there is more than one path to take after high school,” Harrison said. “It is frustrating to me that so many people come into High School and they believe that they have to go to college after this.”
She herself went to a four-year college, but said “I probably shouldn’t have.”
“I was just kind of doing what I thought everybody needed to do,” Harrison said.
Harrison has made her move comfortably. Although it may be a fresh change for some people, House three Assistant Principal Crystal Rich has appreciated her and everything she has already done.
“[Harrison] is a dedicated, driven, and thoughtful professional who brings immense care and effort to her role,” Rich said. “She carries herself with honesty and integrity, embodying the highest standards of professionalism and compassion. [Harrison] truly loves her students and is deeply committed to their success, always going above and beyond to support their growth and well-being. It is an honor to work alongside someone as hardworking and caring as Mrs. Harrison, and we are incredibly thankful to have her as a valued member of our team in both House three and Adult Education.”
