During the Girl’s JV and Varsity Basketball Games on Feb. 11., the Chemo Bag Project showcased its mission, seeking extra support. Visitors had the chance to win a $25 gift card, while helping Nylah Guerin make the difference.
When it comes to being a teen title holder for the Miss New Hampshire program, it might seem like it is all glitz and glam. In reality, each title holder has to create an initiative to help the community. You must be between the ages of 14-18-years-old by the time of the stage competition, be a citizen of New Hampshire, and you must have a community service initiative.
Guerin explains how a local competition lasts an entire day and is held on weekends during the summer. With this comes a lot of fun, but lots of pressure too.
“There are different phases of competition that you are scored on such as interview, talent, fitness, on-stage qualification, and evening gown,” Guerin said.
Guerin started the Chemo Bag initiative to brighten up individuals’ mindsets while they go through a rough patch in life. The founder, Alyssa Pockell, went through cancer treatment, and as her symptoms worsened, she became more “anxious and tired.” When she was going through treatment, her chemo nurse brought her a bag that the hospital had received, and it brightened her whole mood.
“It’s truly heartwarming to see people come together to offer comfort and positivity to those facing cancer,” said Guerin.
The initiative has a true connection to her heart, in regards to feeling good. Guerin’s initiative can help people who have been affected by Cancer and the overthrow of physical and mental takeovers. Even though her initiative only lasts throughout each title, her end goal is miles beyond.
“My end goal is to be able to distribute bags all throughout the United States,” Guerin said. “Another big goal for me is raising as much awareness about cancer as possible.”
“The initiative is for people struggling with cancer that need a little joy and comfort while they undergo treatment,” Guerin said. “I would love to see more volunteers and more bags being created for donations,”
Although each initiative comes to a close throughout each title a Teen holds, this is no end for Guerin. Guerin hopes to inspire people in the future in other counties or states to offer this amazing service to those in need. Including a Winter Bag Assembly being hosted on Feb. 11. Without a doubt, you can help Nylah Guerin make a change wherever you may be.
“The Chemo Bag Project is such a meaningful way to support cancer patients, and I’m so thankful for the titleholders who have joined in to help assemble the bags,” Guerin said. “Through this organization, we’re able to bring a little light to their journey, showing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.”
