Even with great resources, such as school psychologists, house counselors, and more, New Hampshire hasn’t been doing enough regarding the mental health issue. It’s not the resources that’s the issue, it’s how schools are working with students that is. There is still more that needs to be done in the school system regarding mental health.
22% of high school students in New Hampshire seriously consider suicide. This type of death has creeped up to be the second cause of death for 15 to 19 year-olds and the leading cause of death for 14 to 15 year-olds.
The Londonderry school system needs to connect with the students more to create a more comfortable learning environment. To start, we would need to help make awareness about the resources available for the mental health programs, and make it so that it’s easily accessible. The students are having a hard time getting information about these resources.
There are about 1400 kids in our school, yet not a whole lot of students know about the mental health resources that the school can provide.
The Bring Change to Mind club is a great way to start with mental health awareness. They put their all into this club trying to spread the message about mental health. However, Bring Change to Mind isn’t a mental health resource itself, but they can point students into the right direction to hopefully get the help they need.
Now the issue is that students here at LHS are struggling with getting that help. They are terrified to ask for help for many reasons. Even though teachers are trying their best to help us students, it isn’t enough for these students.
Society does not understand the severity of what is happening with our student’s mental health. There are so many disorders including ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and so much more that students are struggling with. It is a huge issue and we need more than just mental health awareness, we need mental health support.
