Valentine’s Day guide to romance on a budget

Categories:

Your valentine is one in a million, but you don’t have to spend a million to show them you care. There are dozens of creative ways to save cash and still show your significant other a good time on Valentine’s Day.  Here are a few ideas:

Cook dinner instead of going to a restaurant: Just imagine how happy your valentine will be when they walk in and see candles and flowers out on the table. Cooking a meal shows that you took the time and effort to create something for your other half.

Write a love letter: A love letter can be personal and makes a great gift for Valentine’s Day. If you pair it with a box of chocolates, you’re sure to get mega brownie points.

Stay in and watch movies instead of going to the theater: Nothing says romance like watching Noah and Ally struggle to be together or seeing 80’s John Cusack hold up an old-school boombox in front of his love’s house as it blasts “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel.

Some good V-Day movies are:

  • The Notebook
  • Love Actually
  • Pretty Woman
  • Say Anything
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • The Wedding Singer
  • How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • The Bridges of Madison County
  • Valentine’s Day
  • The Princess Bride
  • Dear John
  • Dirty Dancing
  • The Fault in our Stars
  • Love Story
  • Shakespeare in Love
  • A Walk to Remember
  • Sixteen Candles
  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding
  • Somewhere in Time
  • Harold and Maude
  • Romancing the Stone
  • Pretty in Pink
  • Overboard
  • While You Were Sleeping
  • Picture Perfect
  • Return to Me
  • Kate & Leopold
  • 50 First Dates
  • Fever Pitch
  • He’s Just Not That Into You
  • Enchanted
  • Mamma Mia!
  • Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist
  • Roman Holiday

A memory box: Take an old cardboard jewelry box and cover it in paper to make it look nicer. Cut out pieces of paper and write memories or compliments on them and put them in the box.

Make your own card: Making a card is easy. Get some pretty paper, scissors and glitter for this one. Fold your paper in half lengthwise and then cut into the shape of half a heart. Decorate it any way you like and cover it in glitter. When it comes to cards too much glitter doesn’t exist.

Make a mixtape: Take some romantic songs that will remind you significant other of you two every time they listen to it. It’s easy, cheap, and they will be able to listen to it anytime they want.

Some good Valentines Day songs

  • “I will always love you” – Whitney Houston
  • “Hey there Delilah”  – Plain white T’s
  • “Love Story” – Taylor Swift
  • “Unchained Melody” – The Righteous Brothers
  • “Bubbly” – Colbie Caillat
  • “Bleeding Love” – Leona Lewis
  • “Home – Phillip Phillips
  • “Lips of Angel – Hinder

  • “I Will Possess Your Heart” – Death Cab For Cutie
  • “I Say a Little Prayer for You” – Aretha Franklin
  • “Going To The Chapel of Love” – The Dixie Cups

Valentine’s Day isn’t about how much money you spend on your honey. It’s all about showing that you care. Don’t go overboard with giant teddy bears and pounds of chocolate. After all it’s really the thought that counts.
