The LHS gymnastics team brought home the state championship plaque on Feb. 13, after 15 years of trials and tribulations. The Lancers put in countless hours of practice each week and ended up beating Pinkerton by a score of 137.8 to 137.75 for the first time since 2001.
“I was very relieved because I knew we could come out on top,” senior Jill McIntire said. “I just knew that the winner and loser was going to come down to only a few tenths of a point.”
McIntire broke the school record for the floor event with a score of 9.4 out of 10. She also broke the school record for the bars event in a previous meet.
“It was a really good feeling,” McIntire said. “I didn’t even know I had broken the floor record until awhile after I had finished competing.”
Senior Jessi Pignone competed in beam and bars during the state meet for the Lancers.
“We knew it would be close,” Pignone said. “The fact that we won it our senior year made it even better.”
The girls will go to regionals on March 12, at Dracut High School in Mass.
