The PVC Pirates placed first in the FIRST robotics competition on March 14, at the North Shore District Event in Reading Mass. The team is heading to Rhode Island this weekend for another competition.
“It was amazing,” sophomore Robotics Team member Bethany Costello said. “It was my first competition, and we won which was really cool.”
In attendance were 42 teams from Maine, N.H. and Mass., and the PVC Pirates finished at the top of the leader board in total points scored.
This year the challenge was for teams to built a robot that scales a tower, picks up a ball and scores goals, and drives over obstacles. The PVC Pirates call their robot “Low Expectations,” but they performed well enough to win the district competition and secure their place in the New England competition in April.
The team was also awarded a Judge’s Award for their robot.
